History
On July 6th, 1975, the Government council president, Ahmed Abdallah, declares the independence of the Comoros, which becomes an Islamic Federal republic. The Comoros national Gendarmerie is created in 1978. The decree n° 83022/PR concerns the Gendarmerie internal service organization and functioning. In 1991, this corps merges with the Defence Comoran Force (DCF), become in 1996 the Development National Army (DNA). In 1997, the corps is equipped with specialized training such as the High Personalities Security Group (HPSG), the "Site Guard" and the motorized brigade. In 2011, the Comoran Gendarmerie structures are reorganized. Before the independence of Comoros, the French gendarmerie established in this archipelago belongs to the detachment of Madagascar.

Organization
Under the supervision of the Comoros Union presidency Defence Department.
Territorial organization
• A Gendarmerie Command.
• A Squad of gendarmes at each big island level (Grande-Comore, Anjouan, Mohéli). Every Squad includes Mobile Gendarmerie and "departmental" Gendarmerie forces.
Specialized Training
• The High Personalities Security Group (HPSG).
• The National Gendarmerie Intervention Platoon (NGIP).
• The Air Transport Gendarmerie Brigade (ATGB).
• The search and criminal investigation Brigade (RB).
• The Maritime Transport Gendarmerie Brigade (MTGB).
Missions
• Criminal investigation.
• Administrative police.
• Military police.

Staff
The corps counts 952 men and women. The feminine recruitment is dating from 1991. There is no conscript of the contingent. The recruitment of the officers is direct or semi-direct and for the non-commissioned officers, it is made by competition. The staff is partially accommodated in barracks according to the assignment.
Training institutions
The Gendarmerie and Armed Forces National School (GAFNS), located in Vwadju, is destined for the non-commissioned officers. The officers are trained in friendly countries.

Cooperation
The Comoros Gendarmerie maintains privileged relationships with France, in particular with Reunion Island Gendarmerie command and the Gendarmerie for the South Indian Ocean security and defence zone. It benefits as such, every year, from technical cooperation actions for the motorcyclists and investigators training, but also in the field of the specialized intervention and from the maintenance of law and order.
