History

The Argentina National Gendarmerie is created by the law n° 12.367 of July 28th, 1938, during the presidency of Roberto Marcelino Ortiz, by the National Congress, in order "to maintain the national identity, strengthen the outside borders, and guarantee the security of all the inhabitants including in regions distant from the country". The law of November 25th, 1971 settles its organization, its missions, its functions, its jurisdictions and its general competence, as well as the legal system of its staff.

Its staff is subjected to the military disciplinary regime with a structure, a training, a military doctrine and a legal training which allows the Gendarmerie personnel to carry out police functions at the same time in peacetime and in wartime. During the Falklands War in 1982, a special unit, the "Alacran" (scorpion) squadron, is created in order to lead commando squad operations.

The law n° 24.059 of January 6th, 1992 connects the Argentina national Gendarmerie to the ministry of the Security of the Nation but this one keeps its functional relationship with the Ministries of Interior and of Defence within the framework of the integration in the defence system.
